## What Excalidraw does

Excalidraw is an open-source online whiteboard for sketching diagrams, wireframes, and notes in a hand-drawn style. It runs in the browser without an account, supports live collaboration with end-to-end encryption, and has a paid Excalidraw+ plan for teams.

Excalidraw is a virtual whiteboard for quick sketches. Shapes, arrows, and text get a hand-drawn look, which keeps the focus on the idea rather than on polish. People use it for system diagrams, flowcharts, wireframes, brainstorming, interviews, and meeting notes. You open excalidraw.com and start drawing; no account is needed.

The editor has an infinite canvas and a compact set of tools: rectangle, ellipse, diamond, arrow, line, free draw, text, image, and eraser. Arrows can bind to shapes and carry labels. You can change stroke, fill, and roughness, use dark mode, zoom and pan, and add shape libraries. Drawings export to PNG, SVG, or the clipboard, or save as an open .excalidraw JSON file.

The free web app works offline as a progressive web app and autosaves to your browser. You can start a live session and invite others by link, and collaboration is end-to-end encrypted. Read-only links let you share a drawing without giving access to the scene.

Excalidraw is open source under the MIT license on GitHub. The editor is also an npm package that developers embed in their own apps, and it is integrated into products such as Notion, Obsidian (through a plugin), CodeSandbox, and Replit. There is a VS Code extension as well.

Excalidraw+ is the paid hosted workspace. It costs $6 per user per month with a 14-day free trial, and adds unlimited scenes and folders saved in the cloud, access management, edit and view sharing, comments, voice hangouts and screen sharing, presentations with PDF and PPTX export, team management, and extended generative AI features such as text to diagram and wireframe to code.
