## What Exercism does

Exercism is a free, not-for-profit platform for practicing programming. It offers thousands of coding exercises across 83 language tracks, automated feedback on your code, and optional mentoring from volunteers.

Exercism is a platform for getting fluent in programming languages through practice. It offers 83 language tracks, from Python, JavaScript, Java, and Rust to COBOL, Zig, and x86-64 Assembly, with more than 8,600 coding exercises in total. The exercises range from short tasks such as Allergies to puzzles such as the Zebra Puzzle, and they build your understanding of each language's concepts step by step.

You can solve exercises in two ways. Exercism is built CLI-first, so you can download exercises and submit solutions from your own terminal and editor. If you do not want to install a language, the in-browser editor supports all 83 languages. After you submit, automated analysis checks your solution and suggests points to improve.

The main difference from many other coding sites is human mentoring. You can ask a volunteer mentor to review your solution for free. Mentors help you learn the conventions and idioms of a language, so you learn to write idiomatic code instead of only working code. You can also publish your solutions, study how other students solved the same exercise, and later become a mentor yourself.

Exercism is completely free, and the site says it will stay free. It is an independent, community-funded, not-for-profit organisation registered in the UK, with Katrina Owen, Jeremy Walker, and Erik Schierboom as trustees. People who donate become Insiders and get extras such as dark mode, advanced GitHub sync, extra mentoring slots, and an ad-free experience. The website code is open source on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license.

Exercism also runs Jiki, a separate platform for complete beginners who are learning to code, and has editions for teams and for research. A Discord server and a forum connect students, mentors, and contributors.

### Best for

Developers who want to learn a new programming language or deepen their skill in one they already use, through practice and code review.

### Not for

Complete beginners who have never programmed, whom Exercism points to Jiki, and people who want video courses or interview preparation.
