## What GitMCP does

GitMCP is a free, open-source remote MCP server that gives AI coding assistants the documentation and code of any public GitHub repository. You change github.com to gitmcp.io in a repo URL and add it to your AI tool.

GitMCP creates a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for any public GitHub project. Its goal is to give AI coding assistants current documentation and code for the libraries you use, so they give fewer made-up answers about APIs they have not seen before.

Setup is a URL change. For a repository, you replace github.com with gitmcp.io, for example gitmcp.io/owner/repo. For a GitHub Pages site, you use owner.gitmcp.io/repo. There is also a generic server at gitmcp.io/docs that lets the assistant choose which repository to read for each request. You then add the URL as a custom MCP server in your tool. The site lists Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Cline, Highlight AI, Augment Code, and Msty as compatible tools, and the README gives setup steps for each.

Once connected, the assistant can call GitMCP tools to fetch documentation, run a smart search, and search code. GitMCP reads an llms.txt file first when a project has one, then an AI-optimized version of the documentation, and then the README. The website also has an embedded chat, so you can ask questions about a repository's documentation in the browser.

GitMCP runs in the cloud and needs no download, installation, or sign-up. It is free to use. The project says it does not require authentication, does not store queries, and only reads public content when a user asks. It follows robots.txt rules for GitHub Pages sites. Repository owners can add a GitMCP badge to their README that links to the server and counts how often their documentation is accessed.

The code is open source under the Apache 2.0 license on GitHub, so teams can also deploy their own instance.

### Best for

Developers who use AI coding assistants such as Cursor, Claude, Windsurf, or VS Code and want accurate context for GitHub libraries.

### Not for

Teams that need AI access to private repositories through a managed service, or people who do not use MCP-compatible AI tools.

## Questions and answers

How do I create a GitMCP server?

Replace github.com with gitmcp.io in any public repository URL, for example gitmcp.io/owner/repo, and add that URL as an MCP server in your AI tool.

Does GitMCP cost money?

No. GitMCP is a free service and the project is open source.

Which AI tools work with it?

Any assistant that supports the Model Context Protocol, including Cursor, Claude Desktop, Windsurf, VS Code, Cline, and others.

What documentation does GitMCP read?

It reads llms.txt first, then an AI-optimized version of the project documentation, and then README.md or the repository root.
