What Ferrite Recording Studio does
Ferrite Recording Studio is an audio recording and multi-track editing app for iPhone and iPad. It is designed for podcasts, radio journalism, lectures, and voice-overs, with one-tap recording and tools like ducking and silence removal.
Ferrite is an audio app from Wooji Juice for spoken-word work: podcasts, radio journalism, lectures, speeches, and voice-overs. It combines the simplicity of a voice memo recorder with a multi-track editing studio, and it is aimed at people who record and edit away from a desk.
Recording takes one tap. You can use the built-in microphones or an external USB mic, record in stereo, and, with a compatible audio interface, record up to 8 channels at once. Live meters and headphone monitoring help you check levels, and bookmarks mark moments that need attention during editing. Recordings can be many hours long and saved as lossy or lossless files.
Editing happens in projects with up to 32 tracks. Clips can be moved, cropped, sliced, faded, and crossfaded, and you can zoom from hours of audio down to single samples. Editing is non-destructive, and undo history is kept even after you close a project. Tools such as automatic ducking and Strip Silence save time, and the Pro version adds Tighten Audio, noise reduction, auto levelling, an 8-band EQ, noise gate, compression, automation, presets, templates, and 2x preview.
Finished projects export as M4A, MP3, WAV, or CAF files, with cover art and MP3 chapters, and can be shared to services such as iCloud or Dropbox. Ferrite supports touch, Apple Pencil, keyboard, mouse, and trackpad, and it works with VoiceOver throughout.
Ferrite is a free download with limits on recording and project length. Ferrite 3 Pro is a one-time in-app purchase, listed at $29.99 in the US App Store, that unlocks projects up to 24 hours long and the advanced tools. It won Best New iOS App at the 2015 Upgradies.
Best for
Podcasters, journalists, teachers, and voice-over artists who want to record and edit spoken audio on an iPhone or iPad.
Not for
Musicians who need a full music production app with MIDI and instruments, and people who work only on Android or Windows.
