What Syncthing does

Keep selected folders in sync between computers you control. Syncthing runs on each device, encrypts communication, and uses device IDs to establish trusted connections.

Syncthing keeps files in selected folders synchronized across two or more computers. The program runs on each participating device and transfers changes between them. You decide which devices can connect and which folders they share. It can work on a local network or across the internet.

Setup starts with an installation on each computer. Syncthing generates a device ID and opens a browser-based administration page. Add the other computer's device ID on each side, then select a folder to share. Both devices must recognize each other before they exchange files. The administration page shows the configured folders, connected devices, and synchronization state.

A new installation can provide a default folder as a starting point. You can use it or configure other folders. After two devices accept the shared folder, files added on either side can synchronize to the other. This makes the tool useful when a working folder needs to remain available on a desktop, laptop, or server.

The project publishes its source code and protocol documentation. Network connections use TLS, and cryptographic device identities restrict communication to approved peers. Files remain on the participating computers rather than in a central cloud storage account. Syncthing supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and other operating systems. It is file synchronization software, so users should plan their own backup and retention process separately.

Best for

People and small teams that want shared working folders across computers they control.

Not for

People who want a managed cloud storage account with a public file-sharing portal.
