What Umami does

Umami is an open-source web analytics platform that works without cookies. It covers traffic, campaigns, events, funnels, session replay, heatmaps, and revenue, and you can self-host it or use Umami Cloud.

Umami is a web analytics platform that puts traffic, campaigns, visitor behavior, conversions, and revenue in one place. You add a tracking script to your site, and the dashboard shows visitors, visits, pageviews, bounce rate, and visit duration, with breakdowns by page, referrer, channel, location, device, and browser. You can pick any date range, filter the data, and compare two periods side by side.

Privacy is a default, not an option. The tracking code sets no cookies, and Umami does not collect personally identifiable information. Users are not tracked across websites, so most sites can remove their cookie banner, and the design supports GDPR, CCPA, and PECR obligations. Umami also tracks page changes in single-page applications without extra setup.

Beyond basic stats, Umami tracks custom events such as button clicks, form submissions, and signups. Analysis tools include goals, funnels, user journeys, retention, UTM campaign tracking, attribution, session replays, and heatmaps. Revenue tracking ties events to amounts so you can see which pages and campaigns bring in the most value. Boards let you build focused dashboards, and teams let several people share access.

The code is open source on GitHub under the MIT license. The self-hosted version runs on Node.js with a PostgreSQL database, and self-hosted data is kept until you delete it. Umami Cloud is the hosted version run by the creators of Umami, with servers in the US and EU. Its Hobby plan is free for personal projects and low-traffic sites, and paid Pro and Business plans use usage-based pricing with a 14-day free trial.

Developers can use an API that covers every operation available in the app, returning JSON. Umami Cloud also offers a read-only MCP server, so AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor can answer questions about your website traffic. Self-hosted instances can turn on an MCP endpoint with an environment variable.
